If your home is anything like mine, there has been a bit of election talk in recent days and weeks (and months and years). My son wishes he could vote himself, but at ten years old he’s got to wait a little longer. My husband and I have already voted, so it’s easy to feel like there’s not much more to do besides sit around and watch our anxiety steadily creep higher. But there is something you—and your kids—can do right now: You can Chalk The Vote.
The #ChalkTheVote campaign was created by nonprofit organization ParentsTogether as a way for parents and their kids to get excited about voting and encourage others in their community to vote. Starting on Sunday, Oct. 18, the organization is encouraging families to create chalk messages and designs to inspire community members to go to the polls. Chalk up any public, high-traffic spots near you, such as bus stops, playgrounds, near voting sites, around (but not on) mailboxes, or on the sidewalk in front of your own home.
Chalk the Vote kicks off on Sunday, but you can participate any day from now until Election Day, Nov. 3. If you need inspiration, ParentsTogether has lots of sample designs, including “vote early” mosaics, voting plan hopscotch, a voting calendar, and a variety of messages and slogans.
By “chalking the vote,” kids can feel empowered to have their voice heard and participate in the election process, which will also hopefully lay the groundwork for them to grow up to be adults who vote, too.
