The COVID-19 pandemic dominated last winter, as well as the end of the 2019 season. That meant many people spent a lot of time at home during the colder months—away from office dress codes, and spared from invitations to holiday parties where you’re instructed to “wear something festive.”

But this winter will be different. Even though we are absolutely still living through a global pandemic, the widespread availability of COVID-19 vaccines (and flu shots)—not to mention many workplaces now requiring employees to show up in-person—means that we’ll be venturing out in public.

Fashion-wise, this may be problematic for two reasons:

You’ve forgotten how to put a presentable outfit together; and You really just want to keep wearing sweatpants.

But don’t worry: Wayne Edelman, the CEO of Meurice Garment Care in New York City is here with some tips for dressing yourself this winter. Here’s what to know.

Create a neutral canvas

The winter months can be pretty dull and colorless, so it makes sense if you want to don bright prints and vivid shades. But Edelman recommends doing that with accessories while wearing layers of neutral items underneath. “Stick to soft, solid colors, or more burnt colors, like maroons, or dark greens,” Edelman says. “Winter wear is expensive, so picking neutral tones can ensure they don’t go out of style and will stay around for years to come.”

Pick clothing made from natural material

If coziness is a concern of yours, Edelman suggests skipping clothing made from synthetic material. “Natural fibersare usually the warmest, like wool, cashmere and mohair,” he explains.

Lots of layers

Yes, dressing in layers helps keep you warm, but it’s also a great way to get more use out of your favorite pieces that may not be considered winter apparel. Have a favorite T-shirt or tank top? Throw a cardigan or blazer over it.

And while you’re at it, be versatile. “Don’t forget the option of tights with boots under shorter garments, so you don’t have to put away all those summer skirts and dresses,” Edelman says. “Also, layering turtlenecks under tanks for a fun way to still wear your cute summer tops.”
