Even in normal times, school supply lists were often long and oddly specific (five orange pocket folders?). But this year, they’re long and oddly specific and we also have to spend money to set up remote-learning spaces in our homes, because even if our kids go back into the classrooms in the fall, we know it’s only a matter of time before it all shuts down again. Which is my depressing way of saying, you should check whether your state is having a tax-free back-to-school weekend this year that will help you lessen the impact of some of those costs.
Every year, the Krazy Coupon Lady kindly compiles a list of the states that participate in this sales tax holiday. There are 16 states offering some form of a tax-free weekend this year, although if you’re in Alabama or Mississippi, you already missed yours (sorry!).
Here is the full list of participating states:
Arkansas: Aug. 1-2Connecticut: Aug. 19-21Florida: Aug. 7-9Iowa: Aug. 7-8Maryland: Aug. 9-15Massachusetts: Aug. 29-30Missouri: Aug. 7-9New Mexico: Aug. 8-9Ohio: Aug. 7-9Oklahoma: Aug. 7-9South Carolina: Aug. 7-9Tennessee: July 31-Aug. 2Texas: Aug. 7-9Virginia: Aug. 7-9Keep in mind that each state has their own tax-free categories and stipulations governing what qualifies and what doesn’t. Some states only waive taxes for clothing and footwear while others include items like computers, backpacks and school supplies. Some have maximum spending limits and/or allow layaway, and some don’t.
