At some point, our beloved, dependable dads, full of wisdom, forget how to do seemingly everything.
Among their varied forgetfulness foibles, one of the worst offenders is how they forget how to be cool, regressing to the most basic, fatuous type of humor (“I don’t trust stairs, they’re always up to something”), while rocking the same haircut that scored them a date in the summer of ’69.
But most of all, they forget how to dress, suddenly declaring that khaki is the greatest color on the spectrum while also giving the least amount of effort possible. What they don’t realize is that certain clothing items these days, like Columbia Sportswear’s collections of stylish and techy shoes and shirts, can look good and be easy, crossing two things off the list at once (something dads love). What’s more, they can be well dressed and comfortable while doing outdoor activities, one of the few things my own father, who lives in the beautiful Northwest, still remembers how to do.
So to help our dads wake up to these facts, here are some cozy, dependable, and handsome items that you can give them for Father’s Day. Please, they need our help.
Vitesse™️ Hiking Shoe

“Dad shoes,” with their bulbous shapes and white exteriors, have somehow become ironically popular, but there’s nothing ironic about the Vitesse™️ Hiking Shoe, which is sleek, lightweight and eye-catching. Your dad, who’s always doing God knows what around the house, will appreciate them for not only the fact that they look sporty and handsome (they come in a variety of cool, electric colors), but also because they’ll allow him to stay fast on his feet all day long, thanks to advanced cushioning and Omni-Grip™️ traction underfoot.
For outdoorsy stuff, the Vitesse™️ also has “Outdry” technology, which will keep his big, awkward feet dry, whether he’s at the local park or on far-away trails. My dad, a connoisseur of both small hikes and ugly white sneakers, will benefit from the Vitesse™️, no doubt.
Zero Rules™️ Short Sleeve
Image: Zero Rules Short SleeveI know, I know; chances are, your dad loves rules. But chances are they’ll also love the Zero Rules™️collection, which is made for the hottest, most humid conditions. Have you ever watched a dad try to do a chore or errand in the heat? They sweat a lot.
The shirts, which are form fitting and far more striking than your average everyday T-shirt, feature sweat-activated, super-cooling Omni-Freeze Zero™️ and moisture-managing Omni-Wick™️. They also have Omni-Shade™️ to block harmful UV rays, so all together your dad will be cool, calm and collected, even on the highest of ladders or the rockiest of nature hikes. Sadly, the shirts will not necessarily keep him calm if his sports team loses or if his mortal enemy next door, Hal, uses his trash cans again.
Respool™️ Knit Short Sleeve Shirt
Image: Respool™️ Knit Short Sleeve ShirtLike the Zero Rules™️ collection, the Respool™️ Short Sleeve Shirt uses Omni-Wick™️ and -Shade™️ to keep papa comfortable and happy. It’s the perfect item for dads to sport at backyard barbecues, fishing trips, summer get togethers and massive outdoor music festivals (JK, my dad would rather die).
Perhaps coolest of all, the shirt is also made of recycled fish nets and landfill, as part of Columbia’s own search-and-rescue mission to save the planet. Earth-conscious, comfortable and handsome — what else do we need? Also, let’s be honest, dads especially have trouble sometimes finding a nice short sleeve shirt that fits them comfortably. The Respool™️ checks that box.
Silver Ridge™️ Pants
Image: Silver Ridge™️ PantsA question that even a young man faces: What sort of pants does one wear on a hike or nature walk? Jeans? Sweatpants? Track pants? None of them seem to fit the bill, really. Luckily there’s Columbia’s Silver Ridge™️ Pants, which are strong, flexible and convertible, meaning they can turn from pants to shorts with one zip.
Like Columbia’s other innovative products, they also feature moisture-management and sun-protection technology, so they’ll keep dad light on his feet in a variety of terrains and weather conditions. They also come in his beloved khaki color — but they’re actually made of cargo, which is a nice way of meeting him halfway as he begins his adventure into respectable fashion.
