These Dehumidifiers Are Being Recalled for Fire Hazard

Gree Electric Appliances is recalling 1.56 million dehumidifiers—including 42 different models from 13 brand names sold by several popular retailers—after reports of at least 23 fires breaking out. Those brand names include Kenmore, GE, SoleusAir, Norpole, and Seabreeze.

Gree issued a similar recall in 2016 following a reported 450 fires and over $19 million in property damage. Here’s what you need to know about the latest recall.

Which Gree dehumidifiers are recalled?

The most recent recall is for the following brand names (see the model number and capacity on each respective link): GE, Kenmore, Norpole, Seabreeze, and SoleusAir. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says they can overheat, smoke, and catch fire, with a reported 23 fires, 688 overheating incidents, and $168,000 from property damage related to the recall.

The recent recall also includes a warning reminding people about the previously recalled Gree dehumidifier models sold under the following brand names (see the model number and capacity on each respective link): Danby, De’Longhi, Fedders, Fellini, Frigidaire, GE, Gree, Kenmore, Norpole, Premiere, Seabreeze, SoleusAir, and SuperClima.

The dehumidifiers from the most recent recall were sold at Home Depot, Lowe’s, Menards, Sam’s Club, Sears, Walmart, and other stores nationwide from 2011 through 2014 for $110 to $400.

The dehumidifiers from the previous recall are potentially associated with four deaths, according to the CPSC. The deaths were adults dying in house fires.

What to do if you have a recalled dehumidifier

Make sure to check the model number with the lists above to see if yours was recalled. You can find the brand and pint capacity printed on the back, side, or front of the dehumidifier. The model number and date can be found printed on a sticker also on the back, side, or front. Make sure to unplug it if you have one. The CPSC says you should stop using any recalled dehumidifier and contact Gree for a full refund.

If you have questions about the recall, you can call Gree at 866-853-2802 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or go to greedehumidifierrecall.com.
