Getting a flat tire is a bummer—but usually, your car can detect the loss of pressure and warn you. However, Volkswagen is recalling 224,704 vehicles for a possible failure in the tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS), which is responsible for warning the driver when tire pressure is below a certain threshold via the driver dashboard. This can be dangerous because driving with tires that have low pressure can decrease control of the driver and increase the risk of a crash, especially as the winter weather approaches and driving conditions can become icy.

This TPMS issue is a software problem that could prevent the system from detecting air pressure loss if all four tires are losing air at the same rate and at the same time. If this happens, the driver will not be notified by the time required by regulations.
The components involved in the recall from the TPMS software include 5Q0.614.517.DS and 5Q0.614.517.EB.

The manufacturer will update the software of the affected cars at cost to the owners. If you were affected by the recall, expect to receive a letter on or around Dec. 30, 2022.
