In a reversal, Intuit’s TurboTax now says customers who haven’t received a relief payment due to a filing error will get them through direct deposit after all—rather than having to claim it as part of a tax return.
Due to a glitch relating to the IRS’ Get My Payment tool, both H&R Block and TurboTax customers had their direct deposits sent to temporary pass-through bank accounts, which were mistakenly designated as customers’ primary direct deposit accounts.
Yesterday, in response, H&R Block said that they would reroute payments to either the correct direct deposit account or to customers’ Emerald Card. TurboTax, however, pointed back to the IRS in a series of tweets, suggesting that their hands were tied. Unfortunately, the IRS’ solution only suggested people with unclaimed funds should claim a Recovery Rebate Credit on Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR of their taxes, which obviously takes much longer to process than a direct deposit.
Now, in an email sent to customers, TurboTax says that they are working with the IRS to get those payments out the door via direct deposit for eligible recipients:
Dear Valued TurboTax Customer,
The IRS recently began issuing a second round of stimulus payments to those eligible. Unfortunately, because of an IRS error, millions of payments were sent to the wrong accounts and some may not have received their stimulus payment.
We have been working tirelessly on a solution with the Treasury and the IRS. As a result, our expectation now is that within days the error will be corrected and stimulus payments will begin being deposited into the correct bank accounts. We have also re-confirmed with the IRS that they have all of the correct banking information.
We know how important these funds are for so many Americans and that everyone is anxious to get their money, now more than ever. We will keep you updated on our efforts, and we will stay on this until you get your money.
Respectfully,
Greg Johnson,
Executive Vice President & General Manager,
