Apple TV users should update the HBOMax app right now to fix some—but not all—of the bugs introduced in last week’s version update.
HBOMax version 5.30.1 released June 5 and replaced the native tvOS video player with a custom-made player that’s causing issues for many Apple TV users. According to numerous posts online, the new custom player is slow, unresponsive, and doesn’t seem to work with the newest Siri Remote.
Fortunately, HBOMax developers issued an emergency patch on Tuesday that reverts the app back to the native tvOS video player, and should fix the playback issues and restore Siri Remote support—at least for some users.
How to update HBOMax on Apple TV
The patch should download and install in the background for users with automatic updates enabled on their Apple TV. You can also manually download the update by going to Settings > Apps, then select the HBOMax update.

If you deleted HBOMax after the custom video player was added, you can redownload it from the app store to get the latest version with the native tvOS player.
There are still more bugs to fix
Installing the update appears to reinstate proper playback controls, but it doesn’t fix everything. Some users are still unable to control HBOMax with the Siri Remote, and others report new issues appeared after updating, including:

The official HBOMax Reddit account is asking users to submit bug reports through this contact form on HBOMax’s help page, or tweet to @HBOMaxHelp on Twitter. A support rep will respond if they can help with the issue, and your reports help the developers identify issues to fix in future updates.
