As HBO Max continues to transform into whatever inferior version of its former self it will eventually turn out to be, we can still enjoy the last remnants of an earlier era, as this month, a handful of returning shows drop new episodes...even if some of them have already been canceled.
The most high-profile of the bunch is Bill Hader’s Barry; the dark comedy about a psychologically unwell hitman who dreams of becoming an actor is back for its fourth and final season on April 16. Which feels about right—the show is ending on its own terms—but there’s still nothing quite like it anywhere else, and it will be missed.

In the Living Wake department, there’s the second chunk of the last season of Titans (April 13), the under-the-radar D.C. superhero show that, like its companion series Doom Patrol, was axed by the streamer’s new management—but thankfully not consigned to the bin with its other tax write-offs.
And speaking of under the radar, Somebody Somewhere (April 23) is the kind of gem that made HBO Max so worth the monthly fee: A show that never stretched to be anything other than what it was—a sad, kind of lumpy emotional drama about a woman who returns to her hometown to care for an ailing relative and feels stuck there, aimless, after they die. I have a feeling a season three renewal isn’t in the cards, which would be a shame. Please watch it.

There are also new things to talk about, including Love & Death (April 27) starring Elizabeth Olsen, a sordid true crime drama about small town Texas murderer Candy Montgomery (if that name sounds familiar, it’s because Hulu already made a movie about her last year); and Fired on Mars (April 20), an animated “existential sci-fi comedy” about a sad sack corporate worker on the red planet (for a taste, check out the animated short upon which it is based).
Here’s everything else coming to HBO Max in April—and what’s leaving. Note there are a lot of the latter again this month; nearly 200 movies and shows are exciting the streamer, including a ton of classic films, from Citizen Kane to When Harry Met Sally to the entire Lethal Weapon franchise. As someone who regularly trolls the catalogue for an old movie to watch on a whim, this is a bummer.
