Traditionally, Microsoft has offered one solution to fix a broken Xbox controller out of warranty: Buy a new one. Of course, third-party repair solutions have existed for a while, but until now, official parts were out of reach. The situation has now changed: Microsoft now sells repair kits for Xbox controllers, which means you can fix your broken controller at home.
Which Xbox controller parts does Microsoft sell?
If you have an Xbox Wireless Controller (the one that ships with a Series X|S console) or the Xbox Elite Controller Series 2, you can buy the following repair parts from the Microsoft store:

Microsoft says that you’re free to repair your controllers even if they’re under warranty, and your warranty won’t be void unless you damage the controller while attempting a repair. That said, the parts are “intended” for out-of-warranty repair, as standard issues with controllers should be covered under the limited one-year warranty.
The parts for the Xbox Wireless Controller cost between $20 and $35, and depending on what’s busted, you may be looking at a fairly expensive fix. A brand new controller costs $60, which isn’t too much more expensive than replacing a set of buttons and the top case, as an example.
On the flip side, repairing the Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 is probably worth the price. It costs around $140 if you buy directly from Microsoft, and the spare parts range from $24 to $60. You’ll almost always end up saving money by attempting a repair over buying a new replacement Elite controller.
How to repair my Xbox controller
Before attempting a repair, make sure you have all the right tools, and that you’ve read the instructions correctly. Microsoft has the steps for repairing both an Xbox Wireless Controller and the Elite Series 2 on its website. The company also has a couple of videos for you to learn how to repair your damaged Xbox controller. If you have an Xbox Wireless Controller, take a look at this video:

Microsoft offers a one-year warranty on spare parts for these Xbox controllers. In case you end up ordering parts but not using them, you can return them within 60 days. Sadly, Microsoft doesn’t sell individual parts for repair, so even if you only have one damaged button, you’ll have to buy the entire set to repair.
